As you may recall I recently work on the exterior of a house that needed a new front porch. The old porch had shifted, which also disconnected the home’s decorative front columns.

Those columns were in bad shape, and were rotting. We replaced the columns with 1 x 10 pine, but instead of just painting them it was decided to clad the columns in PVC coated aluminum. This product has a wood-like texture that adds both protection and beauty. The new cladding will provide many years of service. PVC coated aluminum costs about 40% more than paint. However, it is maintenance free. This will save the owner the job of repainting 17 foot columns in the future.

The old columns bases were rotted and my carpenter could easily move them back and forth.
