Hidden Rot

Sometimes damage is obvious; at other times it is hidden. One of the projects on the townhome that I’m renovating is to update the front porch. Like many, the corner of the porch is supported by a wooden column that was covered with aluminum cladding. On the surface it looked like the structure was perfectly intact. However, once I examined the column it became clear that it had become completely rotten over the last 40 year. This column serves a structural role, and so it was immediately replaced. See the photos below.

Here you can see the original supporting column. If you take a quick glance it looks normal.
Here you can see the rotten post. Clearly, it is offering no support.
