I recently did a major renovation for a home. The home was built in the 1990s, and its style reflected that period. Beyond major updates, like the kitchen, I also upgraded quite a few other areas of the home. One of those was the staircase to the second level. The original staircase had a rounded base and very dated posts. I built detailed new posts and modified the base stair to a more modern square appearance. Naturally, I also updated the hand rails and spindles. The results was modern, yet traditional.

the original staircase had dated posts and an old fashioned round base stair.
Getting ready to to put carpeting on the newly remodeled stairs.
The completed job. Very traditional, yet up to date.
