My customer wanted to add an arch between his home’s kitchen and hallway. This arch had to mimi the rest of the architecture of the house. This meant that the arch needed to be constructed out of a number of pieces of boards and wood trim. The problem was how to make the bottom arc bend as it was made out of 1 x 8 poplar.

The solution was to make many depth-cuts in that piece to so I could bend it. The bent wood was then secured using 18 gauge nails and glue. See the photos below for more details. I’ll post the completed arch in a future post.

I used this Festool saw to make the cuts. It is a precise tool that allowed me to easily cut the grooves at a set depth.

Here is the doorway where the arch will be placed.
Here you can see the multiple cuts that I made in the board.
Another view of the precision cuts. The cuts allowed me to bend the wood.
Using a reciprocating saw to remove the unwanted “ears” from the arch. I’ll show you the finished arch in the near future.
