I have lived in the states for almost 30 years, and as long as I have lived here I’ve watched do-it-yourself (DIY) shows.

The host of these programs are usually dressed in their casual best as they tackled both large and small remodeling projects. Most jobs will have a minor problem that can be fixed simply with a wood shim or the proper washer. The hosts rarely get dirty, and when they do it appears that their dirt was carefully placed by a makeup artist.

Many DIY builders have been inspired by these programs, and that is a good thing. However, they can be misleading by making any project look simpler than it actually is.

A home remodeling fact of life is mess. I thought I would post a photo today of the result of doing about 30 minutes of simple hand excavation. I had to dig out the drains of two window wells. Even with all of the right tools I left the project a dirty mess.
